Aviation min jet develops snag

Dec 08, 2009 Posted Under: Politics
A private jet in which civil aviation minister Praful Patel was flying from Mumbai to Delhi had to return here due to an ‘emergency’ on Monday. The aircraft took off around 3 pm for Delhi. As it took off, the pilot realized he did not get any indication of the landing gear having retracted. The cockpit light indicator gets switched off after the landing gear retracts. However, this did not happen on Monday. The pilot then decided to return to Mumbai. Interestingly, after landing the pilot realized the landing gear had retracted and the fault probably lay with the cockpit indicators. Patel flew to Delhi in the evening on a Kingfisher flight. Nov 23, 2009 Posted Under: Politics
A bid to revive the Khalistan movement in Punjab has grabbed the attention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. The matter was brought to their notice by Punjab Congress leaders a few days ago. Sources in the Prime Minister’s Office said Singh discussed the matter with national security advisor M.K. Narayanan and the director general of police, Punjab. Singh also advised the police chief to nip the movement in the bud. Blatant attempts to revive the separatist movement were noticed on the eve of parliamentary elections in May. AP CM to follow SC order on Reddy brothers’ mines

Nov 23, 2009 Posted Under: Politics, World
ANDHRA Pradesh chief minister K. Rosaiah on Sunday said he would follow the Supreme Court directions regarding suspension of mining in the Obulapuram mines in Anantapur district. The apex court-appointed central empowered committee had earlier suggested that the mines be closed. Rosaiah told mediapersons in Hyderabad that the committee had submitted its report to the Supreme Court and not to the state government. “We will abide by whatever direction the apex court would give us,” he added. In its report, the committee pointed out that there were “prima facie” evidence of violation of forest conservation rules and illegal mining by erasing the inter-state boundaries. More Infiltration Expected in Kashmir

Nov 22, 2009 Posted Under: Politics
About 700 well-armed militants were waiting to cross over to the Indian side, the Jammu and Kashmir top cop warned on Saturday. Kuldeep Khoda, director general of police, said the militants would try to disrupt the “peaceful atmosphere” in the state. Khoda, while speaking at a press conference in Jammu, said the maximum number of infiltration bids took place in November. “Infiltration bids increase during the months of March-April when the passes open and when the infiltration routes in the snow-clad mountains are about to close in October-November,” he said. He said specific intelligence suggests that the militants were trying to build hideouts. However, he was happy that people were providing inputs on infiltrators to the police. “People have started coming in good numbers to provide information about the infiltrators,” Khoda said. Gay People Banned in China

Jun 11, 2009 Posted Under: Politics
Homosexuality was illegal in China until 1997, and officials described it as a mental illness until 2001. Since then the government’s attitude might best be characterized as “don’t condemn, but don’t promote”. So a front-page article that discussed how many gay people there might be here, and an editorial in the state-run China Daily that highlighted the tolerance of a city like Shanghai seemed to represent a shift towards a more tolerant attitude. A few hours later, however, officials in Shanghai were visiting businesses that planned to hold events as part of Pride Week and ordering them to cancel.
